On Wednesday, the driver of a school bus in Michigan lost consciousness, but thanks to the quick thinking of seventh grader Dillon Reeves, the bus was safely brought to a stop.

A 7th grade student named Dillon Reeves from Lois E. Carter Middle School in Warren, Michigan is being praised for his heroic actions in stopping a school bus after the driver lost consciousness at the wheel on Wednesday.

According to Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent Robert D. Livernois, Reeves grabbed the wheel and brake to bring the bus to a safe stop during the students’ ride home.

Livernois commended Reeves for his quick thinking and stated that the Warren Police and Fire Departments responded promptly to ensure the safety of all the students.

According to Livernois, as the driver became increasingly lightheaded, the bus veered into oncoming traffic, putting everyone onboard in danger.

In response, Dillon immediately took action, grabbing the wheel and pulling the brake to bring the bus to a safe stop in the middle of the road. Amidst the chaos, Dillon can be heard shouting for someone to call 911.

Livernois lauded Dillon’s courage and maturity, noting that he applied the brakes gradually to ensure the safety of everyone on board the bus.

During the news conference, Dillon’s parents Steve and Ireta Reeves expressed their immense pride in their son’s heroic actions.

They described the experience as overwhelming and emotional, with Ireta stating that watching the video of Dillon’s bravery made her heart skip a beat.

Steve expressed his gratitude for the honor of having a hero in their family, though he acknowledged that they never expected to be in such a situation. Despite the shock of the incident, the Reeves family is grateful that everyone on board the bus was able to safely return home.

When asked by reporters where Dillon may have learned how to handle the situation on the bus, his parents explained that he had been driving with them since he was very young, even driving golf carts when he was nine years old. They described Dillon as a very attentive driver, always paying close attention to his surroundings. Dillon himself mentioned that he had been observing the bus driver every day, which helped him to know what to do in an emergency.

The Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent Livernois reported that no damage was done to the bus or any property during the incident. The driver is currently in the hospital undergoing testing and observation. Livernois also noted that counseling sessions were offered to the students on the bus the following day and that Dillon will be recognized with a commendation from the school board at a later date for his bravery.
