Music has a way of speaking to us like no other form of communication. Throughout history, songs have played a significant role in society, evoking powerful emotions and leaving a lasting impact. And while musical styles may change over time, there are certain songs that remain timeless, beloved by generation after generation. One such song is ‘You Raise Me Up’, originally released in 2001 and covered by numerous artists since then, including Josh Groban and Westlife.
But amidst all the renditions of this beloved ballad, there is one that may have flown under the radar, yet is arguably one of the most hauntingly beautiful versions you’ll ever hear. It comes from Brigham Young University’s Vocal Point, a remarkable nine-member acapella group founded in 1991 by former BYU students Dave Boyce and Bob Ahlander.
This talented group gained immense popularity on campus and even finished fifth in the third season of NBC’s ‘The Sing-Off’. In 2018, they signed a record deal with Decca Gold, Universal Music Group’s classical label. Jason Bromley, one of the group’s members, humbly stated, “We’re ordinary college students doing extraordinary things.”
Their cover of ‘You Raise Me Up’ is not just a song, it’s a celebration of their undeniable talent and their ability to create unforgettable moments through their music. The video for their rendition takes you on a journey through a breathtaking mountain landscape, as the group effortlessly blends their harmonies and infuses their voices to stunning effect.
