There are certain lessons that should never be forgotten, no matter how many times we’ve heard them. We’re talking about lessons like treating everyone equally, ensuring our children receive a proper education, and most importantly, being responsible while operating heavy machinery, such as driving a car.
We’ve all heard countless horror stories about the dangers of distracted driving, but this particular story stands out. It happened ten years ago, in 2014, but its message is just as important today.
Courtney Sanford, a 32-year-old woman, tragically lost her life in a head-on collision on a US highway. Moments before the crash, she had posted selfies and updated her Facebook page while behind the wheel. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of the consequences of distracted driving.
According to reports, Courtney wrote a Facebook status at 8:33am on Thursday, April 24, 2014 that read: “The happy song makes me so HAPPY.” Just a minute later, at 8:34am, police received reports of a crash.
Courtney was alone in her car when it crossed the central reservation and collided with a recycling truck, instantly bursting into flames. Despite investigations, police found no evidence of alcohol, drugs, or speeding as factors in the collision. However, the incident served as a sobering warning about the dangers of distracted driving.
“In a matter of seconds, a life was over just so she could notify some friends that she was happy. It’s really not worth it,” said High Point Police Department spokesperson Lt Chris Weisner. This tragic event serves as a grim reminder that we must pay attention while we are in the car.
The driver of the recycling truck, 73-year-old John Wallace Thompson, miraculously walked away unharmed from the collision.
This heartbreaking story should remind us all that nothing good can come from driving while distracted. Let this be a timely reminder to prioritize safety and eliminate distractions while behind the wheel.
