Respect Your Parents (A Short Story Must-Read)

A son took his mother to a old age home, where he visited her from time to time.

After the father’s passing, the son made the difficult decision to move his mother to an old age home, where he would visit her occasionally. Little did he know that a phone call from the old age home would change everything.

On the other end of the line, he heard the news that his mother’s condition had worsened and she was on her deathbed. Full of concern, he rushed to her side and asked how he could help.

With a weak voice, she made an unexpected request. She asked her son to install fans in the old age home because there were none. She also requested a fridge to improve the quality of the food, as there were times when she had slept without a meal.

Confused and surprised, the son asked why she had never complained about these issues before. Why was she mentioning them only now, when she had only a few hours left to live?

His mother responded with wisdom and love. She explained that she had managed with the heat, hunger, and pain during her stay at the old age home. But she worried for her son’s future. She said, “When your children send you here, my dear, I’m afraid you won’t be able to manage.”

In her last moments, she passionately advised him to take care of what he left behind. She expressed her desire to modernize the old age home, fearing that one day, her son’s children might abandon him there. She wanted to spare him the pain and struggle she had endured. With her final words, she emphasized, “What you give is what you get.”

This touching story serves as a reminder to us all. It encourages us to show love, respect, and care for our parents, not only in their later years but throughout our lives. May it inspire us to treat our loved ones with kindness and compassion, knowing that our actions today will shape the future that awaits us.
