It is a heartbreaking reality that sometimes we face the loss of our beloved children in tragic accidents, cancer battles, or other diseases. Today, I want to share with you a touching story that will surely tug at your heartstrings. Grab some tissues, because the story of 6-year-old Leland Shoemake is an emotional ride.
Leland Shoemake was an extraordinary 6-year-old boy from Williamson, Georgia. His infectious happiness, sharp intellect, and creative spirit left an indelible mark on those who knew him. He was a little nerd who loved to learn, with a passion for history, the weather, and documentaries. Leland knew his abc’s, numbers, colors, shapes, and even 20 sight words by the time he was just one year old.
In 2015, Leland fell ill unexpectedly and was rushed to the hospital. To his parents’ shock, the doctors discovered that he had a brain infection caused by the amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris. It was unclear how Leland contracted this bacteria, but it is possible that he came into contact with it while playing outdoors, which he loved to do.
Leland fought bravely for his life, but sadly, on September 25, 2015, he passed away. As his grieving parents returned home from the hospital, overcome by sorrow, they discovered something truly remarkable. Resting on their living room table was a note left by Leland, as he often did for his mom and dad.
The note read: ‘Still with you… Thank you mom and dad… Love.’ Alongside these words was a red heart that contained three precious words: mom, dad, and love. This heartfelt message from Leland must have provided some solace to his devastated parents, reminding them of the love and connection they shared.
Leland’s mother, Amber Shoemake, expressed her gratitude for her special child and the comfort his note brought. She says, “We have no idea when he wrote it, but you can tell he was always a special child.” The depth of meaning and the bittersweet reminder of their love through this note supported them during their heart-wrenching loss.
Burying a child is an unimaginable pain for any parent to endure. But let us remember Leland for the incredible young boy he was and honor his memory by cherishing each day of our lives. Leland’s story serves as a reminder that life can be unpredictable, and we should hold dear the moments we share with our loved ones.
Let’s continue to share Leland’s story and ensure that he is never forgotten. His legacy of love and resilience lives on, inspiring us to appreciate the precious moments we have with our children.
