He shared a self-portrait on social media along with a devastating promise weeks before he passed away.

He became a talk show titan renowned all over the world thanks to his show, which ran for 27 years. Provocatively sensational subjects including infidelity, strange fetishes, and broken families were featured. Since the program was so divisive, Springer himself once expressed regret for it, claiming that it “ruined the culture.”

The show has drawn millions of viewers despite being called “trash TV” by critics and even being named the worst program of all time by TV Guide.

Springer released his last social media message a few weeks before he passed away. He had just returned from the Rough Riders St. Patrick’s Parade in Tampa, Florida. He promised his followers in the message that he would return after having a great time.

After his death, a representative for the family revealed that the talk show presenter had passed away peacefully at home following a “brief illness.” According to TMZ, Springer had pancreatic cancer; this information was later corroborated by a family member. According to People Magazine, Rabbi Sandford Kopnick of The Valley Temple in Cincinnati stated that Springer’s illness began unexpectedly and that he passed away from cancer, a condition for which he had not received a formal diagnosis.

“Jerry’s ability to connect with people was at the heart of his success in everything he tried, whether that was politics, broadcasting, or just joking with people on the street who wanted a photo or a word,” Jene Galvin, a family spokesperson and friend of Springer’s, said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. He is irreplaceable, and his passing hurts deeply, but his mind, heart, and humor will live on in our memories.

The Jerry Springer Show Instagram posted an homage to the late host, concluding with the catchphrase that made him famous: “Take care of yourself and each other.”

Many of his followers expressed their condolences by leaving comments on Springer’s most recent social media post.

Jerry Springer, rest in peace; you won’t be forgotten.
