Sad news has come out in the NFL community. Jacoby Jones, the former Ravens wide receiver and a key player in Baltimore’s Super Bowl XLVII victory, has passed away at the age of 40.
The Ravens, the Houston Texans, and the NFL have all confirmed this heartbreaking news. Although the cause of his death has not been disclosed, the NFLPA shared a statement from Jacoby’s family stating that he “passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans.”
Jacoby Jones was not only known for his football skills but also for his memorable appearance on Dancing with the Stars. After the Baltimore Sun first reported the news, people have been sharing their tributes for the beloved NFL star.
The Ravens expressed their deep sorrow, saying, “We are completely heartbroken to learn about the passing of Jacoby Jones. Jacoby had a unique ability to connect with everyone he encountered. His charisma, joy, and love created a one-of-a-kind presence that could light up any room or brighten any dark day. He will be remembered not just for his success on the football field, but also for the lasting personal connections he made with countless people in the Ravens organization, Baltimore community, and every area he called home.”
The Houston Texans also shared their condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Jacoby Jones. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
Jacoby’s colleagues and fellow players were among the first to express their loss. J.J. Watt, the Texans’ defensive end, reminisced about Jacoby’s fun-loving nature and shared a picture of the late athlete in action, saying, “Jacoby was one of the most fun-loving teammates and people I’ve ever been around.”
Torrey Smith, another former Ravens wide receiver, referred to Jacoby as his “brother” and shared throwback pictures, expressing his gratitude for the memories they created together and the impact Jacoby had on the world. Torrey called Jacoby “1 of 1,” highlighting his unforgettable plays and jokes that will “live on forever!” He pledged to look after Jacoby’s family and expressed how deeply Jacoby’s passing affected him.
Pat McAfee, a former NFL player, described Jacoby Jones as an absolute legend who was beloved by everyone he met and had the ability to light up any room he walked into.
John Harbaugh, the Ravens’ head coach, also shared his fond memories of Jacoby, saying, “I loved Jacoby Jones. His spirit, enthusiasm, and love for people were powerful. He was a light. He was the cherished son of his loving mom, Ms. Emily. They were so close. He was a man of faith.” Coach Harbaugh recalled his favorite football play involving Jacoby, where he talked to his mom in the end zone just before a late-game kickoff return, and then scored a touchdown. He also cherished every moment he saw Jacoby’s joyful smile.
Robert Griffin III, a former NFL quarterback, sent his prayers and condolences to Jacoby’s family, friends, and loved ones. He described Jacoby Jones as a triple threat—funny, fast, and able to dance. Griffin expressed that Jacoby will be deeply missed and taken from them too soon.
Jacoby began his coaching journey in 2018, starting as the wide receivers coach at Lane College. He then moved on to coaching tight ends at Morgan State and later became the receivers coach at Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore. In 2022, he joined Alabama State as the receivers coach.
Jacoby’s passing came just three days after his 40th birthday. A month after his death, the New Orleans coroner’s office revealed that he died from heart disease linked to long-term high blood pressure. He passed away from natural causes.
