A missing 9-year-old girl featured on Unsolved Mysteries has been found

Abducted girl featured on Netflix’s ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ reboot found safe in North Carolina

In a heartwarming turn of events, 15-year-old Kayla Unbehaun has been found safe after going missing in 2017. Kayla was just 9 years old when she disappeared while in the care of her non-custodial mother, Heather Unbehaun.

Kayla’s father, Ryan Iserka, was granted full custody of his daughter in early 2017, with Unbehaun only allowed supervised visits. However, when Iserka went to pick up his daughter on July 5, she and her mother were nowhere to be found.

A non-profit center dedicated to finding missing children noted that a felony warrant for Unbehaun’s arrest was issued on July 28, 2017. Shockingly, the number of missing children reported to the FBI in 2022 was nearly 360,000.

Since Kayla’s disappearance, there have been ongoing efforts to find her. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children shared her picture online, both from when she was 9 years old and with an age-progression photo. Various media outlets, including Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries” reboot, covered her story in hopes of locating her.

It was through watching an episode of “Unsolved Mysteries” that a store owner recognized Kayla and immediately contacted the police. Both Kayla and her mother were subsequently arrested, and Kayla, now 15, is now in protective custody.

Kayla’s custodial father, Iserka, traveled to North Carolina to reunite with his daughter, and together they made the journey back to Illinois. The family’s attorney, John Vojta, expressed his joy at Kayla’s safe return and expressed gratitude to the South Elgin Police Department, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and all the law enforcement agencies involved in the case.

As Kayla and her father reconnect and begin this new chapter of their lives, they ask for privacy. Kayla’s mother, Unbehaun, is currently facing a charge of child abduction, a Class 4 felony. She is being held on a $250,000 bond and awaits extradition to Illinois.
