Making the decision to take someone you love off life support is one of the toughest choices anyone could ever face. Ryan Finley found himself in this heart-wrenching situation when his wife, Jill, ended up in a coma.
Ryan discovered Jill unresponsive and not breathing. He desperately tried to help her regain consciousness until paramedics arrived. Despite his efforts, Jill’s condition remained critical. She was admitted to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, where her heart and breathing were unstable. Unfortunately, she slipped into a coma.
Ryan never lost hope and prayed every day for Jill’s recovery. But as the days turned into weeks, doctors informed him that Jill’s chances of survival were slim. They asked him to consider taking her off life support.
In his diary, Ryan wrote, “Today could be the worst day of my life. I essentially have to decide whether or not she will die or not.” He empathized with Jill’s situation and believed she wouldn’t want to live in that state. Reluctantly, he made the decision to let her go.
Heartbroken, the entire family said their goodbyes as the life support machine was turned off. However, to everyone’s astonishment, Jill was still there. The doctors explained that she was going through a phenomenon called the “last rally.”
Incredibly, Jill began to mumble. She stunned her husband by telling him to take her to two of her favorite Mexican restaurants, the Melting Pot or Ted’s. Ryan trusted his intuition and knew she would make it.
Jill not only survived but also underwent a successful heart surgery and rehabilitation. Although she had no memory of her time in a coma, she did experience difficulties with her short-term memory and had trouble pronouncing certain words. Nevertheless, Jill felt grateful for her second chance at life and was ready to embrace it.
The couple emerged from this ordeal stronger than ever, cherishing each day together. “We cherish each day, each minute, each hour now. Not that we didn’t before, it just puts it more in perspective,” Jill shared.
