When you come across someone doing something that seems strange or different to you, ask yourself a simple question: is it hurting anyone? If the answer is no, then it’s best to mind your own business. Everyone has the right to make their own choices, and unless you understand their reasons, it’s not up to you to judge.
Phoebe Kannisto, a mother of six sons in Cheektowaga, New York, knows this all too well. Her sons, ranging from five-year-old triplets to a ten-year-old, all had long hair until recently. Hair length and style are personal choices that shouldn’t affect anyone else. It’s important to respect each other’s choices, even if we don’t personally like them. Imagine how you would feel if someone made fun of your appearance?
Unfortunately, not everyone understands this simple concept. Even young boys aren’t spared from judgment and bullying, especially from adults who should know better. All six of Phoebe’s sons faced ridicule for their long hair. But what the bullies didn’t know was the special reason behind it.
These boys were growing their hair out to donate it to Children with Hair Loss, a nonprofit organization. They had lost a family friend to cancer, and it deeply affected them, as they were close in age. To honor their friend’s memory, they decided to do something meaningful. It took months of patience and determination, but eventually, they were able to donate a staggering 17 feet of hair.
Before you pass judgment or make fun of someone, take a moment to think about the reasons behind their choices. If it doesn’t hurt anyone, then it’s none of your business!
