We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of a sweet angel, Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee. Ryleigh, who was just three years old, lost her life to a rare condition called rhabdomyolysis. This disorder, which affects only one in 200,000 people in the UK, causes the breakdown of muscles. It is truly devastating that her life could have been saved if the signs had been recognized in time.
Ryleigh’s parents are rightfully outraged after discovering that their daughter’s life could have been spared. The young girl had been under the care of doctors for a five-day stay at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Unfortunately, upon her discharge, the doctors failed to notice the “red flags” that indicated a serious condition. Tragically, Ryleigh passed away three months later.
During her time at the hospital, Ryleigh’s physical state deteriorated significantly. However, the medical team overlooked the signs that could have pointed to a neuromuscular problem. When blood tests were conducted, they revealed abnormally high levels of Creatine Kinase, which is often an indication of muscle injury or disease. It was later determined that the doctors had misdiagnosed her with a chest infection or hepatitis. Ryleigh appeared slow, floppy, and lethargic, but her true condition went unrecognized.
Coroner Alan Wilson for Blackpool and Fylde investigated the case and concluded that the doctors involved in Ryleigh’s care had missed crucial opportunities to closely examine her lack of mobility. He expressed his concerns about their failure to identify the seriousness of her condition before discharging her from the hospital.
The family’s lawyer, Diane Rostron, shed light on the situation by stating that the hospital had been given clear advice to seek specialized input from a neuromuscular specialist. If they had followed this guidance, Ryleigh’s condition could have been properly diagnosed as rhabdomyolysis. This knowledge could have provided the family with the opportunity to explore further treatment options and potentially save their beloved daughter.
It is our sincerest hope that Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee’s family will find the closure they deserve after this tragic loss. We extend our deepest sympathies to them during this difficult time. May Ryleigh rest in peace.
