A Life-Changing Exam Day

That evening, as I was getting ready for bed, I couldn’t help but feel excited and nervous at the same time. The next morning, I had a college entrance exam – my ticket to becoming a doctor. This dream was born out of my desire to save lives, inspired by my late mother who bravely fought cancer. I wanted to be an oncologist and make her proud, a fitting tribute to her memory.

When morning came, I woke up without the blare of my alarms. To my horror, I realized they had been turned off. Panic set in as I realized I might miss the only opportunity to enroll in medical school. Determined not to give up, I quickly got dressed and rushed downstairs.

My stepmom, Linda, was enjoying her morning coffee. I poured out my predicament to her and pleaded with her to take me to the exam center. Her response shocked me – she smiled and casually remarked, “Maybe this is a sign you’re not cut out for med school.”

Her words hit me like a ton of bricks. I couldn’t believe that she seemed almost pleased that I would fail. It was a devastating blow to my already fragile spirit.

With no other options available, I decided to make the long walk to the exam center, knowing that it was futile. But just as I resigned myself to my fate, my little brother Jason came to the rescue. He assured me, “Em, I’ve got you covered. Help is on the way.”

I had no idea what Jason meant until I heard the distant wail of police sirens growing nearer and nearer. Linda’s betrayal began to unravel before my eyes. Jason revealed that he had witnessed her sneaking into my room and turning off the alarms.

Linda finally admitted to her actions, boldly stating that she did it because she believed my father’s investment in my education was foolish. She had her own dreams of opening a beauty salon, and she wanted the money to fulfill that ambition.

At that moment, the police arrived, responding to Jason’s call for help. He explained the situation, begging them to assist me in reaching the exam center on time. One of the officers, a compassionate woman, asked Linda if Jason’s accusations were true. Of course, Linda denied everything.

The two officers exchanged a meaningful glance before the woman officer firmly said, “We are here to help people. Get in the car.”

When we arrived at the exam center, the exam was about to begin. Fortunately, there was a slight delay, but the doors had already closed. Desperate and trembling, I struggled to explain my lateness to one of the proctors. Thankfully, the officers stepped in and disclosed the truth about my sabotage by a family member. The proctor’s stern expression softened as he listened. After a moment of hesitation, he nodded and allowed me to take my seat.

Hours later, as I exited the examination room, a sense of relief washed over me. I was proud of myself and immensely grateful to my little hero, Jason. He had saved my dreams at the eleventh hour.

Upon returning home, my dad enveloped me in a warm embrace and apologized for Linda’s actions. Jason had already shared the whole story with him, but my father wanted to hear it from me personally. As I recounted my experience, I saw the fire of anger burning in my dad’s eyes. He turned to Linda and demanded that she leave, packing her things. This incident was the final straw, and my dad knew she didn’t belong in our family anymore.

Linda showed no remorse; it was clear she wasn’t sorry for what she had done. And honestly, I didn’t feel a trace of compassion for her either.
