Outrage as Doctors Fail to Save Three-Year-Old’s Life

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a sweet angel

The heartbreaking story of three-year-old Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee has left her parents furious after discovering that their daughter’s life could have been saved. Ryleigh suffered from rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition that breaks down muscles. Unfortunately, complications from this condition, which affects only one in 200,000 people in the UK, led to her untimely death.

Missed Opportunities and Negligence

Coroner Alan Wilson for Blackpool and Fylde identified that the doctors who treated Ryleigh failed to notice the warning signs before discharging her from the hospital after a five-day stay. They overlooked her lack of mobility, which ultimately resulted in her passing away three months later. It was crucial for the doctors to realize that her deteriorating physical state could be linked to a neuromuscular problem.

A Tragic Series of Events

When Ryleigh was admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, doctors conducted tests that revealed abnormal readings in her blood results. These readings included “extraordinarily high” levels of Creatine Kinase, indicating a possible muscle injury or disease. However, the doctors diagnosed her with a chest infection or hepatitis, despite her appearing slow, floppy, and lethargic.

Seeking Accountability and Solutions

Coroner Wilson has requested evidence from the doctors involved in Ryleigh’s care at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This call for accountability highlights the need for medical professionals to seek specialist advice when necessary. Diane Rostron, a medical negligence attorney, emphasized that the hospital was given clear guidance to consult with a neuromuscular specialist. Had this guidance been followed, Ryleigh could have been diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, enabling her family to explore additional treatment options.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Hillcoat-Bee family during this painful time. It is our hope that they find the closure they deserve and that Ryleigh rests in eternal peace.
